So in small town Honduras my social options are a little limited. Maybe as I make more friends I’ll figure this out – but for now I haven’t been to the couple bars/pool halls (read: shacks with alcohol) here in town. It just doesn’t seem worth it – a bunch of drunk dudes that I can barely understand anyways, one of whom would love to fight an American. No thanks.
Still, everyone finds their fun. A couple of weeks ago I was invited to a housewarming party for someone that lived in my department (like a state). Although it was a 4 hour trip, this is about the closest that anyone lives to me so I went for it. It was a lot of fun – it was great to spend a night with other Americans after more than 2 months in my site.
One of the highlights for me, however, wasn’t the party itself. On the way back home we hitched a ride in a pickup – hitchhiking is still pretty common here. Since the cab was full and I was the new guy I jumped in the bed of the pickup. While we sped around mountain roads my hangover and I sat in the back alone taking in the views. It was one of those moments.
Then a couple weeks ago I had another one: I have a host brother who is probably 5 years older than me. Every once in a while he likes to enjoy a little guaro (like really really cheap tequila made from sugarcane and in this case mixed with lemonade) and sing some rancheras at home karaoke style. This time I joined in – both the drinking and the singing.
Here he is solo:
And here is my attempt:
***Recipe for guaroade: Take a drink you like. Add guaro. Now it is a drink you like but a little less. Enjoy.

Nice singing!!! If you weren’t family, I’d really, I mean really make fun of you!!!!! No …ok ..it wasn’t that bad ; )
Lets be honest . . . you only listed/watched after the first 5 seconds because we are family!
You’re right, most people are still laughing and incapable of writing a post because of this…….its my duty. HA love it!
not bad for a beginning effort, but I’d really like to see a little more enthusiasm next time, Sinatra. Gotta sing from the gut and raise those eyebrows!
I do love the rancheras sound though! Similar to mariachi??
Guero!
Not bad bro. But you gotta put a little more emotion into it. You need to be more dramatic. Funny thing is the only time I’ve sang a ranchera is when I was drunk. I think they go hand in hand. Its good to see you. Take care and talk to you soon.
